The Shenhai Salt Well, built in 1835, is now kept as a museum demonstrating the processes involved in mining and salt production. The site of world’s first man-made well with a depth of over 1000m is still in use and very worthy of a visit. It is a mind-boggling example of ingenuity, as the 1000m well has a diameter of only 11cm. Situated at the back, there is a traditional building with several ‘brine burners’, bubbling away.
